PM Ciolacu: Judicial authorities – duty to present solid evidence in investigation involving potential presidential candidate

In Romania’s electoral context, the judicial authorities have a duty to present the public with extremely solid evidence in an investigation involving, among dozens of people, a potential candidate in the May presidential elections, prime minister Marcel Ciolacu said in a post on his X page.

„Only the communication of clear and unimpeachably substantiated evidence can ensure that this criminal prosecution is not diverted to an electoral manifesto of a particular candidate,” Ciolacu added.

The prime minister emphasized that he will never comment on „a decision of the judiciary or an investigation of the prosecutors”.

„Romania is a democracy in which the separation of powers fully functions. Justice is independent and the law must be applied regardless of the persons, with respect for all the fundamental rights and freedoms of the citizens,” Ciolacu further affirmed.

Calin Georgescu was taken in by police on Wednesday for questioning at the General Prosecutor’s Office, to be heard in a case related to the financing of the electoral campaign.
